What Is BrooklynToPhily Really About?

I have been thinking about doing this site for almost a year. Talking about it. Seeking validation. Now, I am doing it. That is fun.

It does have me thinking though about what is should really be about. Of course, I can make it contrive to the standard rah-rah Philadelphia cheerleading pattern but I think it wants to be more. When I lived in Brooklyn, I felt incredibly alive. I felt like the world was changing and I was at or near the center. That was obviously part a function of my youth and it was incredible but I didn’t think that I could be a part of the change the way that I do here in Philadelphia. In Philadelphia, I feel that anything is attainable. No door is closed to me and I want to share that! I want that to be the message of BTP! I don’t want to pander to useless prosthelytizing. This is real.

I want people to know that you can move outside of the BrooklynManhattan bubble and still be relevant on a bigger stage. In fact, it might even be easier to make an impression on the world outside of the noise of NYC. Patti Smith recently did an interview with Jonathan Lethern in which she said… “New York has closed itself off to the young and the struggling. But there are other cities. Detroit. Poughkeepsie… New York City has been taken away from you… So my advice is: Find a new city.” She might have just crafted the whole conversation around Philadelphia. We are the attainable neighbor.
